Ventura Outrigger Challenge!

Only 9 more days to the outrigger race of the 6 man season!  Saturday, June 9th, Hokuloa will host the Ventura Outrigger Challenge with paddlers coming from up and down the California coast to join in the competition.  Be there to enjoy the festivities which include short and long course races within view of the northern Channel Islands, an amazing raffle, Hawaiian dancers and of course the after race party at Blackbeards Seaside BBQ in Ventura Harbor Village.

Membership Meeting!

It's time for our pre-race MEMBERSHIP Meeting!  Mark your calendar... Tuesday, May 22nd, immediately following race practice (about 7:30pm) at Carrows on Harbor Blvd at Seaward, in the Von's shopping center.  We have MUCH to discuss with planning for our June 9 Ventura Outrigger Challenge race
on the line.  Come prepared with your ideas, suggestions and willingness to pitch in and help!  We need each and every one of you to make our race and our club a success.  Look forward to seeing you at Carrows!

Congratulations Hokuloa! 

Our paddlers rocked the house in San Diego this past weekend.  Weather was beautiful, seas were calm and the competition was tough!  Kudo's to our Open and Golden Men's crews, both taking home 'BLING'.  And to our Novice Women who placed 6th in their first ever Outrigger race!  Great job ladies!  To all who raced, Congratulations.  Whether you placed or not, the accomplishment is in the good fight!

Member Forum Updates

Spring is here and its time for some house cleaning!  Updates to the Member Forum just went live and we may have accidentally removed someone who should not have been.  FIRST... our sincere apologies for the error if it happened.  SECOND... if you are trying to log on to the Member Forum and CANNOT, please submit your access request and we'll process it ASAP.  Again our apologies for any inconvenience.

While you're at it, take a moment to review your profile, update anything that might be outdated and add a picture (the site calls it an Avatar) of your mug!  Really helpful for newer members to put a face to a name.

Race Season is Here!

You heard right Hokuloans.  Race season 2012 is upon us!  Give your coaches a hand right now and indicate which 2012 races you are available for.  Go to the Member Forum and look in "News and Announcements"; "Website and Forum Updates".  Open the 2012 Race Sign Up Sheet and find your name.  Check your availability... there is one tab for women, one for men so you need to know which one applies to you :-)   Its that easy!

The season opens Saturday, May 12th with the Crystal Pier Outrigger Canoe Race hosted by our friends at Hanohano in San Diego.

And DON'T FORGET to Register with SCORA for the 2012 year.  If you are a NEW paddler you must register and get your SCORA number.  If you are a returning SCORA paddler, you must UPDATE your registration (keep the same SCORA number).  Its an easy process but if you have questions or problems talk to our SCORA representative, Wendy Cummings.

It's Keiki Paddling Time

Attention Parents! Recruitment has begun for our Summer Keiki Outrigger Canoe Paddling program (kids 12 thru 19 yrs). Starting May 21st and ending July 25th, the Summer Keiki Program will hold practice Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm on the beach at the end of Spinnaker Drive in Ventura, across from the Channel Islands National Park visitors Center. Hokuloa Cash for Trash

We are an ocean loving sport and as stewards of this vast resource look to prevent the introduction of trash into our local waters.  You can help this effort and generate funds for Hokuloa by participating in our CASH for TRASH recycling program.  Instead of putting certain recyclables in your curbside bin, just collect them in a bag and bring them to the beach each Saturday.  The club will then take all those bags to the recycle center and trade them in for cash!  Eligible recyclables include all plastics number 1 through 7 (anything that packaged produce or berries come in for example), all glass, and of course aluminum cans. If in doubt, toss it in the bag and we let the recycle center do the sorting (no cardboard or paper please... keep putting those in your curbside bin).  It takes only a few bags a week to really make a difference!  Give us your trash.  Help keep our waterways clear and help fund our club!
