Its RACE SEASON now through August and Hokuloa holds race practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 pm and Saturdays at 8:00 am. IF YOU ARE A NEW PADDLER, we invite you to join us on Sunday's at 9:00 am. Email our recruiting officer so we'll know you are coming. We look forward to sharing our sport with you!
We are always looking for new members - both veteran paddlers and those who've never seen a canoe before. No previous paddling experience is required. We'll provide the paddle, the canoe and the training.
As a new paddler you'll begin with the basics on the beach to familiarize you with the different functions and elements of the outrigger canoe, the mechanics of the stroke, the calls and commands, and the safety protocols. Then it's time to hit the water to put what you’ve learned to practice. If you are planning on attending a Hokuloa practice here are some suggestions for what to bring / what not to bring:
- Wear appropriate clothing such as a swim suit or board shorts and preferably a synthetic fiber shirt - this is a water sport and you're going to get wet. Wind proof jackets, hats and rash guards help when it's cold.
- Always wear sun block, regardless of the conditions.
- Be sure to bring either a bottle of water (preferably reusable) or a Camelbak.
- Don't bring anything in the canoe that you aren't prepared to lose to the ocean. If the canoe hulis (flips), everything's going into the water.
Canoes can huli (that's Hawaiian for flip over), even the most experienced crews sometimes end up in the water. We expect all paddlers to be comfortable in the water. You should be able to swim 100 yards and tread water for at least 10 minutes in the ocean. A signed waiver is required before a new paddler leaves the beach.
