The Wall Street Journal has a great article about the fitness benefits out outrigger canoe paddling:
Canoe racing sounds more like a summer camp activity than an athletic endeavor. But outrigger canoe racing requires serious technical skills, strength and stamina.
"You use every muscle in your body at some point during each stroke," says Charlene Reed. "Core strength is especially important, as is leg strength."
Paddling in an outrigger canoe provides not only an intense workout and feelings of euphoria when the boat glides. It also provides some good lessons in teambuilding, says Charlene Reed, founder of Reed and Associates Executive Search.
Marina Outrigger and the other rowing/paddling groups on Mother's Beach in Marina Del Rey are threatened by encroaching development.
The beach where our club Marina del Rey Outrigger in Los Angeles launches from is being surrounded by development. One particular development across the street will take over the existing parking with condos. Their proposal is to have additional parking a 1/4 mile away. This will affect not only our club, but many other rowers, kayakers, SUP's, and other recreational boaters, since this beach is the primary launch site for most of Los Angeles.
The Ventura County Star reports on Margo Pellegrino's stop in Ventura during her paddle down to the Pacific coast to promote ocean protection:
After a rough, cold day at sea, Margo Pellegrino of Medford Lakes, N.J., received a warm welcome from the Hokuloa Outrigger Canoe Club in Ventura Thursday afternoon.
Club members accompanied Pellegrino as she made her way through the heavy fog to Ventura Harbor, where she landed for the night.
Pellegrino is making her way down the coast in an outrigger canoe trying to call attention to the plight of the oceans. She started July 3 in Seattle, and plans to end up in San Diego by Sept. 12.
Japanese Paddler Duke Kaneko (47) made a 200km paddle in two days on his OC-1 from
Hachijojima, an island off the coast of Japan to mainland Japan over
the weekend. This crossing was made in 23 hours across the Kuroshio
Current which is the 2nd fastest current in the world. Waters between
Hachijojima and mainland Japan are rough due to currents moving in all
directions at a maximum speed of 5 knots and at times creating
whirlpools and choppy conditions due to the current moving in all
directions as seen in the video below.
This crossing was made to revive the seafaring ways of the ancient
Japanese and to raise awareness of current social issues in Japan.
The third stage of this crossing will be a OC-6 paddle from Mainland
Japan to Bonin island (1000km) which will take place next summer.
"More than 160 boats competed in the Hokuloa Ventura Channel Challenge on Saturday, an annual outrigger canoe race that got off to a late start because of morning fog."
Hokuloa's popular summer keiki (kids) paddling program returns in June. The program runs from 6/22-7/24 and is open to keikis from 12-19 years old. Paddlers will have a great time learning the fundamentals of outrigger canoe paddling and competing in three sprint races. Visit our keiki paddling page for more info.
Located in Ventura, CA, Hokuloa Outrigger Canoe Club has a diverse membership of all ages and abilities and offers competitive paddling for both adults and keiki (kids).
Our mission is to promote and develop the sport of amateur outrigger canoe paddling through structured athletic programs, races, fitness training, and outreach to enhance public support.
Hokuloa is always looking for new members - both veteran paddlers and those who've never seen a canoe before. No previous paddling experience is required. We'll provide the paddle, the canoe and the training.
If your company or organization is looking for something out of the ordinary to highlight the importance of team work, please contact Hokuloa to discuss a team building event out on the water.
