Cold Hands Paddle

Come for the race, stay for the raffle! A great way to start the paddling season: an awesome ( some say not even cold!) 4 mile course from Cabrillo Beach, open to paddleboards, SUPs, and (new this year) outrigger canoes. No fee to race! Just bring money to buy the killer shirts and a chance to win two Joe Bark paddleboards. All proceeds benefit the Sarcoma Alliance.

Race registration starts at 7am, race starts at 8am. Raffle at 11am. Plenty of parking. Ocean of Ohana SoCal will be there to demo brand new OC-1s. Try one! Joe Bark will also have plenty of paddleboards and SUPs to demo.

Winter Season Morning Training Begins 11/4

Winter season OC1/OC2 morning practices will begin on Wednesday 11/4. Meet at the container at dawn (or just before). Be prepared for cold weather and cold water. We will hold our last weekday evening practice for 2009 on Thursday 10/29. Saturday morning OC6 practices will continue as scheduled.

Ocean Ohana Demo Day

Ocean Ohana will be having a demo day at Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey on Sunday September 30th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Chris will have the following boats available for demo: Hurricane, Pegasus, Fuze, Fusion and Stingray 2. As well as the Huki S1-x Surfski made by Hurricane (Outrigger-zone) he may have a Tiger Built Pahoa there as well. In addition there will be paddles from Kialoa, Quickblade, Werner, Xylo,and Mudbrook.

The mobile store will be open for anyone needing off season items, they will have specials on paddles, clothing, hydration packs, etc. Specials are good at the Demo only.

Runaway Canoe

Runaway canoe makes solo trip from O‘ahu to  Kaua‘i:

Lihu‘e Station Firefighter Butch Keahiolalo rescues more than Kaua‘i residents in distress. Recently, he rescued a one-man outrigger canoe.

Canoes on the islands, like most seafaring craft, possess a spirit all their own and are regarded with reverence and respect within the paddling community.

So when Keahiolalo received a call from his battalion chief regarding the discovery of a “reefed” canoe on Kipu Kai Beach, he began scrolling through a long list of Kaua‘i watermen and women in search of its owner.

Here’s what I found out from my Tahitian paddling friends. Taaroa Dubois the second place getter paddles three hours every day - every day. Often from Tahiti to Moorea and back, this stretch of ocean is quite open and susceptible to strong winds. Lewis Laughlin, 1st, trains three times a day, first at 4am for a couple of hours, then at midday then in the afternoon. Lewis turned up for a surf-ski race the day after the Super Aito 32km and won by two minutes.

Super Aito Virgin

OCpaddler.com has an article about what it's like to compete for the first time in what's described as the worlds most competitive OC-1 race, Tahiti's four-day Super Aito:

It’s a Wednesday afternoon and I’m stuck paddling my second race of the day in a rudderless Tahitian Va’a into a blazing headwind while getting passed by a steady stream of Tahitian paddlers. The frustration of getting passed soon gives way to loneliness as the last few stragglers paddle by. I finally finish amid French accented cheers of “go Hawai’i.” My relief at having finished one of the most agonizing races of my life turns to astonishment as I realize that I was almost in last place. And there were still two races to go before I would be done with the Super Aito.
